Author visits, book sales, movies, tours, special displays and crafts are among the events and free programs planned at the 37 branches of the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library during National Library Week, which began Sunday. A highlight will be the reading of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s April 16, 1963, “Letter from Birmingham Jail” by community leaders at 5:30 p.m. today in the Frank E. Merriweather Jr. Library, 1324 Jefferson Ave. It will be part of a worldwide celebration of the letter’s 50th anniversary.

“Libraries are changing – they’re full of activity and excitement,” said Mary Jean Jakubowski, director of the library system. “I hope folks will discover or rediscover what libraries have to offer.”
