The Western New York Flash opened their National Women’s Soccer League season Sunday night with a 1-0 loss to the Sky Blue FC at Yurcak Field in Piscataway, N.J.

The lone goal of the game came on an own-goal in the first half when a corner kick by the Sky Blue’s Danesha Adams landed at the feet of another New Jersey player and deflected in off a Flash defender.

Abby Wambach had a chance for the equalizer with 12 seconds left but her try went over the top.

The next game of the Flash will be Saturday night at the Washington Spirit. The home opener at Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester will be on April 27 against the Boston Breakers.
