Finishing touches are being applied to a respite house for the developmentally disabled, scheduled to open this spring, which has received financial and in-kind support from the community.
The seed for Children’s Guild Foundation Mildred M. Seegler Respite House, at 52 Dixon Drive, was planted last August with a gift of $200,000 from the foundation, in memory of its namesake.
Operated by Community Services for the Developmentally Disabled, it will provide overnight respite – beginning with weekend service only – for children and families from Buffalo and surrounding areas.
“Community Services has received donations from more than a dozen organizations,” said Dean Stresing, community relations coordinator. “Some of the donations were monetary and others in-kind, but all of them had one purpose: to supply and outfit the home to accommodate the children with developmental disabilities that will be staying there for overnights or afterschool hours.”
Additional grant and cash donations totaled $54,500, some of which was used toward wheelchair accessibility and sensory equipment. In-kind donations included appliances, furniture, toys and landscaping.
