The drugs posing the greatest danger to families today aren’t found on street corners being pushed by drug dealers–they’re in your bathroom medicine cabinet and prescribed by your doctor.
That’s why the One Island, One Team, One Dream to be Drug-Free Coalition will present an expert panel to discuss the dangers of prescription drug abuse.
Erie County Sheriff Tim Howard and other law enforcement officials from the New York State Troopers, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the National Guard Counter Drug Task Force will join a local teacher, judge, doctor and student for a conversation with the community, moderated by Luke Moretti, a reporter with Buffalo’s WIVB news station.
The event is the first in a 10-day drug awareness campaign on the island. It will take place Tuesday at the Grand Island Fire Company, 2275 Baseline Road, at 7 p.m. Coffee and dessert will be served. For more information, call 831-2298 or e-mail Sally@eccpasa.org.

The Town Board will meet Monday for a workshop at 5:30 p.m. and for its regular meeting at 8 p.m.. There will be two public hearings held at the regular meeting. One will address a $50,000 increase in the cost of a $250,000 capital improvement project at the Town’s Water Treatment Plant. The other will address the possible adoption of a law outlining insurance and permit requirements for public assemblies on the island. The board will also meet at 8 a.m. Wednesday for a workshop to discuss staffing, building and zoning issues. All Town Board meetings will convene at Town Hall, 2255 Baseline Road.
A representative from Congressman Brian Higgins’ office will meet with residents Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon in Town Hall’s upper lobby, 2255 Baseline Road. Anyone with concerns or questions about federal issues is invited to stop by.
