Carol F. Cox, of Williamsville, a former elementary school teacher and volunteer with various local organizations, died Thursday in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Amherst. She was 83.

Born Carol Freund in Buffalo, she was a graduate of Fosdick-Masten Park High School and Buffalo State Teachers College.

She worked as a teacher at Smallwood School in Snyder. After raising her children, she went back to work as a substitute teacher in the Williamsville School District.

Mrs. Cox was a sustaining member of the Junior League of Buffalo, where she was co-chairwoman of the inaugural Decorators’ Showhouse at the Larkin House.

She served as president and director emeritus of the Children’s Guild of Buffalo, from which she received the Heart of Gold Award in 1986.

She was a longtime member of Park Country Club of Buffalo, where she played golf and was a member of the Women’s Board. She also volunteered as a tour guide for the Buffalo Landmark Society.

Mrs. Cox was a 50-year member of North Presbyterian Church, where she also served as both a trustee and an elder.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Kevin D., and four daughters, Elizabeth Beard, Mary Ellen Kreuz, Diane Shantler and Julie Haley.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. next Saturday, in North Presbyterian Church, 300 N. Forest Road, Amherst.
