Southern California quartet the Dirty Heads brought a refreshing new blend of styles into the jam-band scene with the release of the 2008 debut “Any Port In A Storm.” The quartet then refined this hybrid of reggae, hip-hop, alt-rock and plain old jams with the arrival of last year’s “Cabin By the Sea” album.

The group is most often compared to the much-loved ’90s post-reggae outfit Sublime – a connection underscored by the Dirty Heads’ collaboration with Sublime With Rome vocalist Rome Ramirez on the 2010 hit “Lay Me Down.” But simply calling the group an updated version of Sublime does not go far enough. The Heads’ sunny melodies, vibrant, uplifting grooves and generally optimistic philosophy combine to create a distinctive sound that screams “California!” at the top of its lungs.

The Dirty Heads bring its own brand of sunshine to town via the Odyssey Tour, which finds the group headlining a bill that also includes Shiny Toy Guns & Midi Matilda, and Oh No Fiasco. – Jeff Miers
