Don’t infringe rights of law-abiding citizens
Recently and for the first time, abortion and pregnancy statistics were itemized separately as requested by the Chairoscuro Foundation. In New York City, there were 208,541 pregnancies in 2010. This resulted in 124,791 live births and 83,750 abortions, an astonishing 40 percent rate. These statistics bring up some troubling issues. Many more lives are lost to abortion in one city than are lost to gun violence in our whole country.
The Fifth and 14th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution declare that government cannot deprive any person of “life, liberty, or property” without due process of law. Also, Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights reads: “everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.”
The Constitution was put in place to protect law-abiding citizens in this country. I can understand why a woman’s rights are protected by these amendments. How is it possible that the same Constitution that gives a woman a right to take a life doesn’t protect a gun owner who wants to save a life? Law-abiding citizens should have a right to bear firearms of their choice. Criminals will not obey these laws. We should be able to protect ourselves with at least as much firepower as a criminal may commit an assault with.
