A popular fishing spot on Buffalo’s West Side will stay open, Rep. Brian Higgins said Wednesday.

The U.S. Corps of Engineers has reversed a decision to fence off the northern part of Squaw Island Park, according to Higgins.

Higgins met with the Corps’ Buffalo commander, Lt. Col. Owen Beaudoin, in his Washington, D.C., office on Wednesday, and they discussed the fishing spot, between the Niagara River and the Black Rock Channel.

In late March, the Corps had said the pier was never intended for recreational use and that it would construct a fence, prohibiting public access to the Lower Black Rock Lock Lower West Side Pier, adjacent to the lock in the Black Rock Channel.

Boats use the channel to avoid the Niagara River, which has dangerous reefs and rapids.
