Niagara and St. Bonaventure split a baseball doubleheader Tuesday, but they didn’t even come close to playing as many innings as Erie Community College did in just one game.

The Kats played 17 innings before losing to Onondaga Community College, 3-2, at ECC’s North Campus. Sophomore Ricky Mendiola (Williamsville South) had a two-run double in the first inning but the Kats (15-11, 6-1 Region III) would not score again. Freshman Matt Wilhem (Amherst) allowed three hits in 6-1/3 innings of relief. OCC used a walk, a sacrifice and a single to score the winning run.

At Niagara Falls’ Sal Maglie Stadium, host Niagara won its opener with St. Bonaventure, 6-3, before Bona won a rain-shortened 4-0 contest in five innings. Freshman Greg Rodgers had three RBIs in the opener for Niagara (10-21). Senior Billy Urban had a two-run single for St. Bonaventure (9-15) in the second.

The University at Buffalo spoiled Niagara’s home softball debut by sweeping a doubleheader. The Bulls (9-22) won a mercy-rule ended game in five innings, 8-0, before rain ended a 1-0 pitcher’s duel between UB junior Heather Ryder and Niagara junior Jen Sansano (Clarence) in five.
