TOWN OF LOCKPORT – Saturday afternoon’s steady winds turned a family bonfire into a raging grass fire that scorched three acres of land behind 6054 Crosby Road, sheriff’s deputies reported.

An Appleton man told deputies he intended to enjoy a small bonfire in a three-foot fire pit with his family, but shortly after 3:30 p.m., the winds began pushing the fire out of control. A crew from Rapids Fire Company arrived and quickly determined that additional help was needed to control the fire.

No one was hurt in the incident, but deputies did charge Peter J. Johnson, 28, of Hess Road, Appleton, with an open burn violation.
