The Erie County Commission on the Status of Women will host an “Unhappy Hour” to mark National Equal Pay Day at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Templeton Landing, 2 Templeton Terrace, Buffalo.

The date symbolizes how far into 2013 women must work to earn what men earned in 2012, based on statistics that showed women on average earned 77 percent of what men earned in 2011.

The event, which is free and open to women and men who are at least 21, will feature a brief presentation from Althea Luehrsen, executive director of Leadership Buffalo and an expert on pay equity.

She will discuss obstacles to equal pay for women and tips to navigate those obstacles.

The goal of the “Unhappy Hour” event is to raise awareness on the issue of pay equity.

The event also is designed to provide networking opportunities and tools that will empower participants in negotiating pay that reflects their worth, organizers said.

Participants are encouraged to wear the color red – the color of pay equity – to be entered in a drawing to win a door prize.
