James H. Hume, a former Genesee County legislator, longtime dairy farmer and former leader of the Alexander Central School Board, died Monday in the county nursing home. He was 85.
He served for 10 years as a Pavilion/Bethany/Alexander legislator and later was a nine-year member of the board of trustees at Genesee Community College.
Mr. Hume was a graduate of Cornell University. His beginning in a vital role in the agricultural community – especially as a 4-H leader – earned him an Outstanding Young Farmer Award in 1958.
He also headed the Alexander Central School Board, the Genesee County Farm Bureau and the Cooperative Extension Service.
Surviving are his wife, the former Jean Gillette; four sons, Jeffrey, Joel, Judd and Jack; and a daughter, Jill Bailey.
A memorial service will be scheduled.
