DRS Technologies, an Arlington, Va.-based defense electronics supplier and services firm, will lay off 36 employees in Western New York this summer when the company closes its Cheektowaga location by Sept. 30.
DRS, formerly Sierra Research, announced in January that it would be closing the location by year’s end because of the impact of “market conditions and the industry environment,” but the company did not say at that time precisely when or how many jobs would be lost.
It said the work would be relocated to other sites and that many employees would be able to apply for jobs at those sites.
According to a WARN notice filed with the state Department of Labor late last week, the layoffs at the DRS Integrated Defense Systems and Services facility will occur between June 28 and the Sept. 30 closing date of the plant at 485 Cayuga Road.
DRS develops, makes and supports a range of technology products and systems for homeland security and “mission-critical” functions for military forces, intelligence agencies and prime contractors worldwide.
The company is a subsidiary of Finmeccanica SpA, Italy’s leading high-technology manufacturer and one of the top 10 global firms in aerospace, defense and security. Finmeccanica SpA has 70,000 workers worldwide.
