With the snow coming down at St. Joe’s, the officials conferred with lacrosse coach Peter Hudecki.

“Are we really going to play?”

Hudecki and his players were up for it, and so was Williamsville East, so the host Marauders opened their season with a snowy, 10-9 victory Wednesday evening.

“Everyone was antsy to get on the field,” said Hudecki. “My guys said, ‘Coach, it’s going to be so much fun, let’s play in the snow.’

“You had to play a bit differently because everyone was slipping and sliding. It was a real battle. The snow really neutralized everybody.”

Sophomore Dominic Perna scored three goals for St. Joe’s, including one to break a 9-9 tie with 6:24 left to play.

Senior Andrew Bond had three goals and freshman Chris Berger had two while freshman goalie Eric Deakin had 16 saves.

Colin Greenway had three goals and two assists for Williamsville East.

“They had a great time,” Hudecki said of his players. “We just want to get to that next step, the next progression to that final goal.”

The next game for St. Joe’s will be in a little different conditions: The Marauders play Section V power Pittsford during Spring Break in Orlando, Fla.

Among other teams starting their seasons with victories were defending Section VI champion Orchard Park (Class A) and Silver Creek (C). OP thumped visiting Lancaster, 26-0, as Austin Goltz had nine goals and four assists. Silver Creek standout senior Zed Williams had eight goals in a 16-8 victory at Cathedral Prep in Erie, Pa.

In the second half of an OP doubleheader, the Orchard Park girls (1-1) beat Niagara-Wheatfield, 10-9. Wheatfield had a 7-2 halftime lead but OP rallied back behind Emily Markarian (five goals), who scored the game-winner with 50 seconds left.
