Two of Section VI’s defending lacrosse champions opened their seasons in style Thursday.

Defending Class A girls lacrosse champion Lancaster, which has won seven sectional titles in the last eight years, started this season by ending a nine-game losing streak to teams from powerful Section V (Rochester area). Allie Stewart had six goals and three assists as the Redskins notched a 14-12 victory at Webster Schroeder. It is the Redskins’ first win over a Section V team since beating East Rochester in 2010.

“This was our best game in years and years,” said Lancaster coach Julie Buccieri. “It was awesome. We started the season 0-3 last year [vs. Section V teams] and we didn’t want to start that way again. This is such a big deal to us.”

Defending Section VI Class B boys lacrosse champion Hamburg started with an impressive rout of Class B power Niagara-Wheatfield, 14-4. Junior Lucas Shafer had four goals and three assists as Hamburg jumped to a 9-2 halftime lead over the team it has faced in the last two Class B championship games.

“We’ve been practicing so hard in spite of the weather,” said Hamburg coach Jerry Severino. “We’ve got guys in the skill areas that are turning up their game and we’ve got long poles that are playing very well.”
