Families without kids should also get rebates
The State Legislature has just approved a $350 tax rebate, payable in October 2014. The rebate checks will be in place for three years. However, only taxpayers earning $40,000 to $300,000 who have at least one child under the age of 18 are eligible to receive it.
So a young couple earning $41,000 but with no children gets nothing. And a retired couple with $41,000 of taxable income gets nothing.
But a professional couple with $299,000 of income and one child would receive the rebate. How fair is that?
The Legislature needs to correct this bad decision, pronto. Get rid of the need for having dependent children.
