Michael D. Whitfield, of Buffalo, a retired city firefighter, died Friday in Erie County Medical Center after a brief illness. He was 44.

Born in Buffalo, Mr. Whitfield was educated at Grover Cleveland High School and Medaille College. He went on to serve in the U.S. Army and became a firefighter in the Buffalo Fire Department before later retiring about five years ago after being injured on duty.

Mr. Whitfield was an award-winning firefighter after making life-saving efforts on the job, according to his mother, Faye, who added that her son also ran his own construction business, which he named Absolute Construction.

Besides his mother, Mr. Whitfield is survived by two sons, Michael Seay and Preston Michael Whitfield; a daughter, Jessica Marie; and two sisters, Yvonne and Tracey Avent.

A service will be at noon Saturday in Brian K. Lewis Funeral Home, 347 Peckham St.
