Dec. 29, 1921 – March 26, 2013

Evelyn T. Tierney, of West Seneca, worked as a switchboard operator at Mercy Hospital for 21 years, and for many years after that she volunteered up to six days a week at the hospital, delivering flowers and mail to patients and working in the gift shop.

She died Tuesday in Elderwood Health Care at Lakewood, Hamburg. She was 91.

Born Evelyn Hattenberger in Buffalo, she graduated from St. Ann’s Commercial School. From 1938 to 1944, she worked as a secretary for Bates Jackson, an engraving company. In 1966, she re-entered the workforce as a third-shift switchboard operator until her retirement 1988.

Mrs. Tierney went on to win Mercy Hospital’s 1999 Volunteer of the Year Award. She also volunteered at Deaconess Center until it closed in 2011, and she did two routes for Meals on Wheels until she could no longer drive at age 88. She also worked part time as a clerk at Schwebel’s Bakery in Orchard Park from 2002 to 2007.

Mrs. Tierney was a member of Daughters of Erin, the Buffalo Irish Center, the Sloan Social Club and the Mercy League at Mercy Hospital.

She is survived by a son, Timothy; two daughters, Cheryl Massett and Gail Olivieri; and a sister, Muriel Steinel.

Services will be at 9 a.m. Friday in Lombardo Funeral Home, 3060 Abbott Road, Orchard Park.
