A popular fishing spot at the north end of Squaw Island Park has been declared off-limits by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District.

The Corps of Engineers announced Wednesday that it plans to start installing a fence Monday to block public access to the Black Rock Lock Lower West Side Pier, which is adjacent to the lock in the Black Rock Channel. A spokesman said the move is “in the interest of public safety.”

“We recognize the value of this outdoor activity,” the spokesman added, “however, the Lower West Pier is a navigation structure designed to separate the Niagara River from the Black Rock Channel. It was never intended for recreational use.”

The 3.5-mile Black Rock Channel and the lock allow watercraft to bypass the dangerous reefs and rapids in the Niagara River between Buffalo Harbor and Tonawanda Harbor.
