The Wegmans are coming, the Wegmans are coming!

Wegmans is working to open a new store in Boston, Mass.

Though newspapers and blogs in the Boston area are buzzing with stories about the company’s expansion into the city, Wegmans is remaining quiet.

“We are very interested in a site in the Fenway neighborhood. Discussions with the developer are under way, and we anticipate that an acceptable agreement can be reached in the near future,” the company said in a statement.

Wegmans entered Massachusetts in October 2011 with a store in Northborough, about 35 miles west of Boston.

Shoppers camped overnight for that store’s opening. Last year, drama students at the town’s Algonquin Regional High School penned and performed “Wegmans ... The Musical!”

CEO Danny Wegman has said that its Boston store would be about half the size of its typical 130,000-square-foot store and that Boston would be the most highly educated market Wegmans has entered, according to the Boston Globe. Wegmans has said it seeks out highly educated, densely populated demographics.
