SHIPSHAPE – The Buffalo Maritime Center has started a crowd-sourcing campaign to help finish work on a replica of the War of 1812 sloop USS Trippe, which is under construction in the center’s shop on Arthur Street in Black Rock.

The Trippe, which was outfitted on the Niagara River after it was purchased by the Navy in 1812, played a vital role in the American victory in the Battle of Lake Erie the following year.

The British got their revenge later in 1813 when they attacked Buffalo. They found the Trippe near Buffalo Creek and set it ablaze, destroying it.

The Maritime Center, which hopes to finish the ship in time to sail it to the Battle of Lake Erie bicentennial celebration in September in Ohio, is offering premiums for contributions. A $10 donation is rewarded with a deck tour of the sloop. Those who give $100 will get to sail on it. For info, call 544-5658 or visit
