Evansville, which defeated Sweet 16 team Wichita State twice in the regular season, will be Tuesday’s opponent for Canisius in quarterfinals of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament at 7 p.m. in the Koessler Athletic Center.
The Aces (20-14) have won six of their last seven games, including a 59-56 win at Wichita State, which upset No. 1 seed Gonzaga in the third round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday.
The Aces’ record also includes a 56-50 home loss to the University at Buffalo in November and losses to NCAA Tournament participants Creighton (twice), Butler and Notre Dame.
Coached by Marty Simmons, who played at Indiana and Evansville, the team is led by first team All-Missouri Valley Conference selection Colt Ryan, who averages 19.8 ppg and has made 166 three-point shots made. The Aces’ starters include 6-foot-10 freshman center Egidijus Mockevicius from Lithuania.
Canisius and Evansville never have met in men’s basketball. The Griffs (20-13) advanced with their 84-82 overtime win at Youngstown State on Saturday night. Evansville moved on by defeating Eastern Kentucky, 86-72, in Evansville on Saturday afternoon. Ryan had 25 points in the win and needs nine to break the Evansville career scoring record of 2,236 by Larry Humes (1964-66), who led his teams to two NCAA College Division championships.
