April 29, 1928 – March 22, 2013

Monsignor S. Paul Ayoub, who led Mother of Divine Grace Catholic Church in Cheektowaga for more than three decades, died Friday in Fort Myers, Fla. He was 84.

He was the last pastor to serve in the parish beside the Kensington Expressway on Old Maryvale Drive, which was founded in 1946. Appointed in December 1975, he remained in the post until 2009, when the church was merged with Infant of Prague Parish and he retired.

Born in Brooklyn, he attended St. Bernard Seminary in Rochester and was ordained May 30, 1953.

His first assignment was at St. Joseph Parish in Bliss. In 1954, he became assistant pastor at St. Martin’s Church in Buffalo. He became a teacher at Notre Dame High School in Batavia in 1963 and taught there until he was assigned to the Cheektowaga parish.

While in Batavia, he also served as a weekend assistant at St. Peter’s Church in Le Roy, chaplain of the Newman Center at Genesee Community College and pastor of Holy Name of Mary Church in East Pembroke.

He was appointed a prelate of honor and received the title of monsignor in 1993.

Survivors include a nephew.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today in St. Columbkille Catholic Church, Fort Myers.
