Firing Witherspoon was terrible mistake

The University at Buffalo is neither Notre Dame nor Duke University. Its primary mission is to provide an environment that encourages individual students to learn and attain their academic goals. The recently dismissed basketball coach, Reggie Witherspoon, personified this objective.

Research and athletics are to complement the academic mission, not to compete with it. There is a growing trend among high-ranking university officials to expand their particular interests at the expense of student education. Witness the large number of undergraduate courses taught by graduate students and adjunct faculty (read low pay, part time and no or limited benefits).

The firing of Witherspoon will cost UB more than $1 million plus immeasurable good will. No doubt the type of coach the ad will seek is one similar to the man of sterling character who has led Louisville to its current prominence.
