At least 75 spots remain open for Buffalo seventh- and eighth-graders willing to participate in the 18th annual Buffalo Youth Police Academy at Buffalo Police Headquarters on Franklin Street from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, according to Police Officer Genevieve Rak.

Information about the event, sponsored by Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda’s Citizen Advisory Group, Buffalo Police Department Explorer Post 102, the West Side Youth Development Coalition and Medaille College, can be obtained by calling 851-4523.

Rak said students staying for the entire academy session Saturday will be eligible to win prizes.

She said the academy begins at 8:30 a.m. with breakfast in the second-floor police academy at headquarters, with classes running from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Parents or guardians must bring their children to the session and are encouraged to stay and watch. Free breakfast, lunch and snacks will be provided. There is no cost for attending.

Students must bring identification and a pen or pencil and must wear presentable attire and provide a phone number that can be called on Saturday.
