The Castellani Art Museum at Niagara University has been sending out love letters to former Western New York artists who have gone on to make names for themselves in the wider art world.

As part of its ongoing “Western New York Collects” series, the Castellani will open an exhibition dedicated to the work of former Big Orbit Gallery co-director Josh Iguchi on Sunday.

Iguchi, who served at Big Orbit from 1993-96, left Buffalo for Chicago in ’96 and later became the director of photographic and graphic services for Ralph Lauren. His work, often based on famous pieces of religious art, is in part an attempt to highlight how religions have adapted themselves to contemporary technology and shifting lifestyles.

“Assimilating current ideas, materials and techniques to represent traditional imagery sets up an irony that plays with our conventions and expectations,” Iguchi said in a statement. The exhibition features several photographs by the artist, the centerpiece of which is his 1995 re-creation of Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper,” on loan from the Burchfield Penney Art Center. – Colin Dabkowski
