Why would FAA allow small knives on flights?

I could not believe my ears when I heard the announcement that the Federal Aviation Administration is now going to allow passengers to carry small knives on board the airlines. What is the FAA thinking; how safe could that be? People are short-tempered these days and this is just an invitation for trouble. How easy will this make it for people to pull out a knife if someone gets disgruntled on the flight? And yet when I packed a small tube of face cream last year, I had it confiscated immediately. The FAA needs to rethink this; a knife can do a lot of damage.
