The Rev. Edward H. Schroeder, pastor of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Clarence Center for 23 years, died Wednesday in Buffalo General Medical Center. He was 82.
Father Schroeder was appointed pastor of St. Augustine’s in 1981 after serving for six years as pastor of two Southern Tier churches – St. John Fisher in South Dayton and St. Elizabeth in Cherry Creek. He retired in 2004.
Born in Buffalo, he was a graduate of the Diocesan Preparatory Seminary and Our Lady of the Angels Seminary at Niagara University.
Father Schroeder completed additional seminary studies at Collegium Canisianum in Innsbruck, Austria, and was ordained in Innsbruck on March 23, 1958.
His first assignment was as missionary apostolate at Sacred Heart Church in Angelica. He then served as assistant pastor at St. Mary of Sorrows and St. James churches in Buffalo, St. Francis of Assisi Church in the City of Tonawanda, Immaculate Conception in Wellsville, Fourteen Holy Helpers in West Seneca and Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Clarence.
Surviving are a brother, David, and a sister, Mary Ann Lesinski.
Bishop Edward M. Grosz, auxiliary bishop of Buffalo, will offer a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Good Shepherd Parish’s St. Augustine worship site, 8700 Goodrich Road, Clarence Center.
