Robert F. West, a retired electrical engineer with the Erie County Water Authority, died Sunday in his Hamburg home after a short illness. He was 88.

Born in Woodlawn, he was a graduate of Woodlawn High School and earned a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Buffalo. A Navy veteran of World War II, he served aboard a destroyer escort.

Mr. West was an electrical engineer at Sylvania in Cheektowaga for 20 years, then worked with the Erie County Water Authority from 1971 to 2003.

A member of Wesleyan Church of Hamburg since 1972, he enjoyed bowling, bicycling, reading and traveling with his family.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, the former Justine Thomas; a son, Robert T.; and three daughters, Deborah McIvor, Denise and Marjorie Faes.

A memorial service will be arranged.
