NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. – A 26-year-old man who suffered what were originally considered life-threatening injuries in a one-car crash here Feb. 24 was charged today with causing the accident that prompted officials to rush him to Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo for treatment because they feared he might die.

Michael Ewings of this city was charged with careless driving and driving a motor vehicle with no license for the crash of his northbound car on the Niagara River Parkway near Sherk Road here about 10:50 p.m. Feb. 24.

Detectives with the Niagara Regional Police Service's collision reconstruction unit determined that Ewings let his vehicle drift off the right edge of the roadway and strike what police called a “mature maple tree.” The police service and Niagara Parks Police had Ewings taken that night by paramedics to the hospital in Buffalo.

Today he was issued summonses for a court session later this month to deal with the criminal charges placed against him under the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario.
