What next in the Buffalo Bills’ quarterback situation?

The Bills narrowed their options Tuesday with the release of Ryan Fitzpatrick after he turned down an offer of a renegotiated contract.

Fitzpatrick was due a $3 million roster bonus under the contract he signed with the team in the middle of the 2011 season.

It became apparent after the 2012 season ended, though, that it was likely Fitzpatrick’s days as the team’s starter were ending.

Buffalo resigned veteran Tarvaris Jackson and new head coach Doug Marrone announced that he would compete for the starting job next season. Compete with whom?

Buffalo is expected to select a quarterback early in next month’s NFL Draft even though the crop of elite prospects at are not as numerous as in 2012

Another option is to sign an NFL free agent, but the pickings are thin. There may be an experienced QB under contract with other NFL teams that the Bills could trade for.

By cutting Fitzpatrick, the Bills saved themselves $3 million in salary cap space this season, but they will have to take a $7 million hit in 2014 for Fitzpatrick’s contract.
