A Sanborn man wore his Army Reserve uniform and lied to bank tellers about being deployed in order to steal thousands of dollars he actually spent for gambling, according to the Erie County District Attorney’s Office.

Steven Burns, 22, of Ward Road, pleaded guilty to first-degree scheme to defraud, as charged, before Erie County Judge Michael D’Amico, the office announced Wednesday.

Burns admitted cashing checks from his personal account between June and November of last year, when he had insufficient funds to cover them. He cashed the checks at local banks, falsely telling the tellers that he was taking care of a sick relative and needed the cash in order to be deployed, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

Burns received slightly more than $4,000 in the scam.

He faces up to four years in prison when sentenced on May 29.
