SILVER CREEK – The Town of Hanover is seeking funding to help with a dredging project in Cattaraugus Creek.

At the workshop preceding Monday’s Town Board meeting, Highway Superintendent Steve D’Angelo told the board he has been in contact with engineers as well as state officials to try to proceed with a plan to dredge the creek.

He estimated the dredging would cost between $500,000 and $700,000. D’Angelo said the creek was last dredged 11 years ago and the cost then was $260,000. He said he explained the need for the work to an aide in State Sen. Catharine Young’s office and stressed the importance of dredging the creek for flood mitigation and promoting boating and fishing.

Chautauqua County Legislator George Borrello, a Sunset Bay resident, agreed with the need for the project.

In other matters, D’Angelo said he has been taking inventory of supplies and hopes to start a drainage project in Sunset Bay soon.

Councilman Ken Cross reported he is working on a project to install a sign at BiCentennial Park on King Road. Cross said that the land for the park was donated by former Councilman Harry VanCuren in 1975 and that the park has not had an official sign.

The town park is available for family gatherings and community events. Town Supervisor Todd Johnson agreed with the initial plans. Cross is expected to report back at the next meeting about information for the sign.

Councilman Frederick Seegert said he set up a meeting with Chautauqua County Sheriff Joseph Gerace for 4 p.m. March 28 to discuss extending the contract for police coverage this year.

Town Board members agreed that increased coverage would be planned for the summer months in Sunset Bay and fewer patrols in the winter months.

Silver Creek Department of Public Works foreman Ralph Crawford reported to the Town Board that permits are being sought for connection to the town’s sewer system and for a change in the location of the driveway for the DPW building on Routes 5 and 20. The building was granted a special-use permit last fall with the stipulations that the sewer connection be established and the driveway be changed and lighting added.
