Civilians don’t need such powerful guns
Since when did the AR-15/M-16 style rifle become the “gold standard” for civilian gun ownership?
These rifles are clearly over capacity for self-defense, as well as hunting. The .223 cartridge is in the varmint class (woodchucks, etc.) and too light for deer-size game. These weapons are marginal for target use, with many better options. They, however, excel at their intended purpose, which is to kill or disable the greatest number of people in the shortest amount of time.
The National Rifle Association claims that these are “modern sporting rifles.” Knowledgeable gun owners can see through this charade.
The National Firearms Act of 1934, and subsequent law, effectively banned the private ownership of fully automatic guns. It’s the reason you can’t stroll to the local gun shop and walk out with a Thompson submachine gun. These M-16 “assault rifles” are just as deadly as the Tommy gun and should join the list of guns banned in 1934. It’s time for responsible gun owners to become part of the solution, rather than part of the problem.
