Area copper thieves, who have stolen downspouts from churches and water pipes from homes to cash in for big bucks at a scrap yard, now have another target: the scrap yard itself.

A representative for Diamond Hurwitz Scrap on Hanna Street on the East Side reported to Buffalo police Sunday that culprits broke into the west side of the company’s brick building.

The thieves made a large hole in the building and stole an unknown amount of copper, according to a police report.

They also set off the building’s alarm and fled toward Depot Street. Some copper was recovered from behind the building.
