Dr. Robert J. Gormley of Williamsville, an ophthalmologist, died Friday in Niagara Hospice House, Lockport. He was 80.

Born in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont., he was raised in Niagara Falls, N.Y. He was in the first graduating class of the former Bishop Duffy High School. He attended Niagara University and later graduated from the University of Ottawa School of Medicine, Ottawa, Ont.

He did his internship at St. Francis Hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii, and his residency at the Cleveland Clinic.

Dr. Gormley returned to Niagara Falls in 1971, where for the next 30 years he operated his own practice before becoming an associate at Eye Care and Vision Associates in Williamsville, where he had worked for the past 10 years.

He was an active member of the New York State Ophthalmological Society, a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a diplomate with the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

In addition, he was a 40-year member of the Niagara Falls Country Club, and a member of the Youngstown Yacht Club, the Park Country Club and the Hideaway Beach Club in Marco Island, Fla.

His first wife, the former Nancy J. Neault, died in 1995.

He is survived by his wife, the former Faith Sugg Paddock; two sons, Tobin J. and Jay M.; a daughter, Jill K.; and two brothers, Jerome F. and Michael C.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Monday in St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 620 Center St., Lewiston.
