Robert A. Hayman, of Williamsville, a former electrical engineer and business owner, died Wednesday in Hospice Care at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital. He was 83.

A graduate of Buffalo Technical High School, he served in the Army Signal Corps before earning both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Buffalo.

After working for 19 years at Cornell Aeronautical Laboratories, he spent the next 20 years working for a number of companies, mostly defense contractors in Western New York, New Jersey and Long Island, before returning to Amherst to start Business Information & Development Services with his son, David.

A lifelong member of Temple Beth Tzedek and the Jewish War Veterans, Mr. Hayman also served his community as a member and past master of Perseverance Masonic Lodge, where every summer he took children from the Crippled Children’s Guild on an outing to Fantasy Island, and every year stood on Delaware Avenue selling The Buffalo News on Kids Day.

As a longtime member of the Western New York Science Congress, Mr. Hayman encouraged students in their studies and hobbies of science. He also served as an election inspector for nearly 20 years.

He is survived by his wife, Arlene; two sons, David I. and Michael R.; and a daughter, Susan H. Kruchten.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. today in Amherst Memorial Chapel, 281 Dodge Road, Getzville, with burial in Elmlawn Cemetery, Town of Tonawanda.
