Depew firefighters battled a house fire Thursday night that caused $80,000 in damage and claimed the life of the family’s dog.
Depew police first responded at 8 p.m. and found the house at 3000 George Urban Blvd. engulfed in flames. Believing the occupants were inside, Officers J. Wolfe, B. Gummo and Detective J. Thompson attempted to enter the home but were forced back by flames and thick smoke.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and completed a search of the dwelling, determining that no one was inside. The family’s dog was found dead.
The family, of two adults and two children, who are not being identified, was assisted by the Red Cross.
The fire appears to have started in the kitchen. Damage was estimated at $70,000 to the structure and $10,000 to the contents.
