French-Algerian guitarist Pierre Bensusan has essentially created his own musical genre over the past 20-plus years. Blending elements of jazz, folk, classical music and ethnic and indigenous music, Bensusan has earned a worldwide cult following drawn to the yearning-infused beauty of his music. One peer described Bensusan’s music as “the way the guitar would want to sound if it played itself,” which is a pretty spot-on, if esoteric, description. Perhaps revered guitarist Leo Kottke said it best, though: “Pierre’s music gives me the shakes,” Kottke has written. “No other guitarist shares his strange gifts of sophistication, accessibility, and downright joy.”

Bensusan performs at 8 p.m. Saturday in the Burchfield Penney Arts Center (1300 Elmwood Ave.). Tickets are $20 advance (box office), $25 at the door.
