Canisius lost 16 seniors from last year’s Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men’s lacrosse champions, and the young team is struggling this season. Cornell (4-0) handed the Griffs (0-3) an 18-7 loss Tuesday in the home opener at the Demske Sports Complex, the Big Red’s 10 straight win in the all-time series between the schools.

Rob Pannell had four goals and four assists for the Big Red and has 28 points already this season. Cornell dominated faceoffs 27-9 and had a 30-23 advantage in ground balls. Austin Romantic, a sophomore from Ithaca, scored twice for Canisius. Tim Edwards, Joe Rautenstrauch (St. Francis), Vince Gravino, Brandon Bull and Kevin Lalley (Orchard Park) were the other goal scorers for the Griffs.

Niagara’s women’s team (0-5) took a 4-0 lead and led most of the way but dropped a 12-11 game at Cincinnati on a goal by Taylor Young with three seconds left. Brittany Delano led Niagara with three goals. Kayla Smith, Danielle Maio and Fran Pollastro had two tallies each.
