April 3, 1927 – March 3, 2013

H. Lee Sweitzer, of Akron, former owner and operator of Lee Sweitzer Quality Meats in Clarence, died Sunday in Absolut Care of Gasport after a long illness. He was 85.

Born and educated in Tyrone, Pa., Mr. Sweitzer served in the U.S. Army in 1945.

Later, he moved to Western New York, where he ran the Clarence meat store that bore his name for more than 15 years.

He moved in 1977 to Florida, where he and his son, Stephen, operated the Beef Barn of Holiday, Fla., until the early 1990s.

Mr. Sweitzer returned to Western New York and lived in the Akron area, where he worked for Wegmans supermarket until his retirement in the late 1990s.

His first wife, Diane Cawthra Sweitzer, died in November 1967.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 44 years, the former Barbara Lee Mauerman; his son; and six daughters, Sheryl Andrews, Stacy Lowery, Shannon Bowman, Suzanne Terrier, Nancy Mauerman and Martha Sams.

A memorial service will be scheduled.
