William L. Rybarczyk of Amherst, a 40-year employee with New York Telephone, now Verizon, died Sunday in Upstate University Medical Center, Syracuse. He was 74.

Born in Buffalo, he was a 1956 graduate of Seneca Vocational High School. He served in the Army at Fort Riley, Kan., from 1962 to 1965.

Mr. Rybarczyk began working for New York Telephone in the late 1950s. In the early 1970s, he became instrumental in the company’s conversion from switching offices to computers.

He retired from Verizon in 1997. After his retirement, he traveled extensively across the U.S.

He was a Eucharistic minister and lector at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Getzville for 40 years and was a grand knight of Bishop Burke Council No. 5284, Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, the former Judith E. Fies; a daughter, Renee Marie; two brothers, Gerald and Donald; and two sisters, Sharon Blazer and Marilyn.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Pius X Church, 1700 North French Road, Getzville.
