Tyler Gjurich and Nolan Sheeran each scored twice for the Buffalo Jr. Sabres, who completed a four-game sweep of the Burlington (Ont.) Cougars in the first round of the Ontario Junior Hockey League playoffs, 6-2, Sunday at Wave Twin Rinks in Burlington, Ont. Sheeran also had three assists while Gjurich had two.
Pat Egan scored Buffalo’s first goal and Brian Ruff closed out the scoring with an empty-net goal.
Burlington scored 20 seconds in and, after Egan’s power-play goal, took a 2-1 lead into the second period. Gjurich tied it with assists from Sheeran and Ryan Schmelzer, and Sheeran put Buffalo in front to stay at 11:26 with assists from Schmelzer and Gjurich.
Jr. Sabres goalie Parker Gahagen played 56½ minutes and made 35 saves, two on breakaways. Bobby Bloomfield played the final 3½ minutes.
Buffalo’s second-round opponent is to be determined. It could be the Oakville Blades, North York Rangers or Toronto Lakeshore Patriots. The second round is tentatively scheduled to begin the week of March 11.
