Aug. 27, 1934 – March 2, 2013

Paul E. Donovan, of South Buffalo, a substance abuse counselor, died Saturday in Mercy Hospital after a long illness. He was 78.

Born in Buffalo, he was a graduate of Kensington High School and earned his bachelor’s degree in social science from Empire State College.

Mr. Donovan started the substance abuse program at Wyoming Correctional Facility in the mid-1980s and served there until his retirement in 1996.

Successful in overcoming substance abuse himself, he was a Friend of Bill W. for 31 years. Devoted to his family and pets, he was an avid golfer and fisherman.

Surviving are his wife of 24 years, the former Norma J. Weishaar; three sons, Michael, Joseph and Eric Godwin; and three daughters, Lori Stiglmeier, Kathleen and Kimberly Fay.

A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Lombardo Funeral Home, 3060 Abbott Road, Orchard Park.
