H. Michael Hunter, a longtime employee at Tonawanda Coke, died Saturday in St. John Baptist Church Hospice after a short illness. He was 54.

A native of Buffalo, Mr. Hunter attended Buffalo public and parochial schools. He was an athletic youth and was a registered Buffalo Golden Gloves boxer.

He was employed at Tonawanda Coke and was a member of United Steelworkers Union Local 44475 for 29 years. He also served on the union’s grievance committee.

Mr. Hunter served in the Marine Corps Reserves for six years. He enjoyed cooking and entertaining, his family said.

He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 14 years, the former Shirley Davis; two daughters, Ebony M. and Michelle Peay; a stepson, Ronnie D. Cason Jr.; a brother, Mark E. S.; and three sisters, Marcia Davis, Dawn M. Pittman and Susan Hunter-Cole.

There will be no funeral services.
