CALLING COOKS – Private chefs and organizations are invited to compete Saturday afternoon in the first chili cook-off hosted by Lt. Col Matt Urban Post 7275, Veterans of Foreign Wars, at 3741 Walden Ave., Cheektowaga. Entry fee is $10, and all proceeds will help rebuild the Depew-Lancaster Boys & Girls Club, which was destroyed by fire two months ago.

Judging will take place at 2:30 p.m., with entries assessed for color, aroma, texture, flavor and heat. Plaques will be awarded to the top three finalists. Then the public will get a chance to taste the entries and vote for a “people’s choice award” from 3 to 6 p.m. There also will be an award for best table presentation. HELP WANTED – The nation’s No. 1 fossil park, the Penn Dixie Paleontological and Outdoor Education Center in Hamburg, needs volunteers to help with exhibits, school groups, scouts, public days, special events, astronomy nights, program development, fundraising, marketing and promotions.

To introduce them to the programs, Penn Dixie will hold a volunteer training session from 8:30 a.m. to noon on March 16 in the auditorium of Gateway Executive Office, 3556 Lake Shore Road, Blasdell.

Junior and senior high school students and adults of varying backgrounds are welcome. The session is free for Penn Dixie members, $25 for non-members. After the session, all who are interested in seeing the Penn Dixie site will be given a tour. For info, call 627-4560 or visit www.penndixie.org.

BIG WEEKEND – The Hotel @ Lafayette will be the site of this year’s annual meeting of Omicron Province of Sigma Phi Gamma International Sorority, an organization for working women, Friday through Sunday. Eta Sigma Chapter will host, and members of the Beta Beta and Beta Alpha chapters will attend, along with Sigma Phi Gamma International Organizer Liz Cochrane.

Business meetings will be held Saturday and Sunday mornings, and historian Chuck LaChiusa will lead a walking tour of downtown Buffalo Saturday afternoon. The group’s annual charitable donation will be given to Canine Helpers of America.

HONORARY LAWMEN – The New York State Sheriffs Association Institute, which provides centralized training programs and services for sheriff’s offices across the state, is holding its annual honorary membership drive, Erie County Sheriff Tim Howard reports. Contributions to the group are tax-deductive and support its flagship program, the annual Sheriffs Summer Camp for economically challenged youngsters on Keuka Lake. More than 800 children from across the state attend each summer, enjoying outdoor activities and developing an understanding of the law and law enforcement officers.
