A state study of the health of people living in and near the Town of Tonawanda’s industrial corridor is the subject of a public meeting scheduled for Tuesday night in the town.

The meeting, which will include a brief presentation by a representative of the state Health Department, begins at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the Sheridan Parkside Community Center, 169 Sheridan Parkside Drive.

Earlier this month, the Health Department released its findings of a data review, from 1990 to 2009, of health-related diagnoses. The data revealed elevated rates of certain types of cancer among males and females, as well preterm births and heart defects among infants.

The review was undertaken in response to community concerns about potential health effects from exposures to emissions from the area’s industries and motor vehicle traffic. In announcing its findings, however, the department stressed that the review can’t prove a cause-and-effect relationship between the exposures and illnesses.
