It was a good night for Western New York’s Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women’s basketball teams on Friday.

Niagara put the clamps on Fairfield’s offense, which opened the door for the Purple Eagles to come back and beat their visitors, 50-39, before 241 at the Gallagher Center.

Lauren Gatto led Niagara with 14 points, while Meghan McGuinness added 12 as NU used a 21-2 blitz to overcome a 27-23 halftime hole.

Meanwhile, Canisius won for just the second time in eight games, beating Manhattan (6-20, 3-12), 63-47, at the Koessler Athletic Center.

The Purple Eagles held Fairfield (16-10, 10-5) to just 12 second-half points on 4-of-21 shooting. For the game, Niagara limited the Stags, who had their three-game winning streak snapped, to 16 for 47 from the floor (34 percent).

Shy Britton’s basket with 10:46 left broke a 32-32 tie to give Niagara (13-13, 8-7), which snapped a two-game losing streak, the lead for good.

Jen Lennox had 15 points for Canisius as she was one of three Griffs (10-16, 7-8) in double figures. Ashley Wilkes added 14, while Kayla Hoohuli had 11.

The teams switch opponents Sunday.
