A Batavia Middle School student was suspended Friday for bringing a BB gun to school.
Batavia Schools Superintendent Christopher Dailey said the gun was found in the student’s locker Thursday, following a search that was conducted by school officials after they were alerted that a student might have brought either cigarettes or chewing tobacco on to school grounds. Instead, school officials found the BB gun, Dailey said, adding that the incident did not pose an immediate threat to anyone.
“It was just a young boy making a bad decision. No one was threatened and there was no intent to harm anybody,” he said.
Still, the student, whose age and grade level were not released Friday, was suspended for five days, which will be followed by a superintendent’s hearing to determine whether or not the suspension will be extended.
Parents of students who attend the middle school were informed of the incident and the BB gun was turned over to an officer from the City of Batavia’s Youth Detective Bureau while an investigation into the incident continues.
