Ryan Ciminelli of Cheektowaga shot a five-game total of 1,246 (246.2 average) to share the lead after the first day of qualifying for the U.S. Bowling Congress Masters championship Tuesday at Brunswick Zone Carolier in North Brunswick, N.J. Also in at 1,246 after the first of three days of qualifying was two-handed star Osku Palermaa of Finland.
The field of 468 bowlers will be whittled to 64 for the start of match play on Friday.
Ciminelli, a 25-year-old left-hander, had a pair of 279 games in his round. John Szczerbinski of North Tonawanda was in the best position of the other four bowlers with Western New York ties. He finished with games of 279 and 246 for a total of 1,125 and 32nd place.
